In this book, I don't tell you how to make soap in few steps and then give you a few recipes to try, so you can start your own soap-making business. You can find that information anywhere; you don't have to buy my book to learn that. Wait! Oh! I did that in this book. I did explain how to make soap. I also did give you a few simple recipes too. But I hope that is not why you bought this book.
In this book, my goal is to explain to you in simple terms how to create great natural and organic soaps and not just make soaps. There is a difference. You will get to see and understand that difference when you understand each of the ingredients and how they interact and react with each other.
You will not have a great business if you are just making carbon copies of a few soaps of other people which your customers can go buy from any local stores. What will make you unique is when you create a blend or two of your own and people start liking your creation. That is when you can hit the home run in this business.
Imagine growing your soap company into a local, regional, and ultimately a national brand.
This is a two-part book. In the first part I show you how to get started. I show you every step you need to take to make your first batch of soap. Then I show you how to test your creation and how to figure out what works and what does not.
In the second part of the book, I teach you everything you need to know about turning your newfound passion into a successful business. I share my own story and how I turned my passion into a six-figure business. Though this book is not about my success but yours, you may find it inspiring that an average housewife like myself was able to build the business and then sell it for a good profit.

At first glance that's about what the ratio seemed for this book. I've been called a picky buyer, but I prefer to say that I try to be a careful one. So I had to *really* think about this one, since the nay sayers are rather harsh and the ones who rated high didn't seem nearly as vocal. Even if the “good” reviews outnumbered the others.Based on that first impression, statistically this book had a 90% chance of being a good buy. But upon further digging (clicking really) at the date of writing this, there were 6 bad reviews (Amazon says twelve critical, but “A little more detailed than I needed” doesn't qualify as critical to me). What some of the not so good (and somewhat disparaging) reviews said rang strongly in my mind and really made me almost not buy it. But some of the good reviews really pushed me the other way.
I wanted to buy this book for two reasons and this book address them. First I wanted to learn the proper way of making soap(s) and the other reason is that the idea of starting a home-based business fascinates me, soap or otherwise. Most “good” reviews agreed that this was a good beginner book and that it fell right into what I was looking for, so what the heck, I went for it. One might say my common sense prevailed, but honestly? I figured that the majority is the majority for a reason and at less than five dollars, I didn't have much to lose.
After reading the entire book, I came to my own conclusions about some of the more critical reviews, and since this book's rating seems to be affected by them (I don't want to say heavily, but the top review isn't nice and a single 1 star review is marked as 17%), I decided it would be a good way to show my support by writing in.
Some critical reviews were just plain not true. Some were. For both, I can understand why from their points of view it was true for them. This book does certainly have a grandiose sounding title that could be taken many different ways, but I'd say it's based on how the author's own experience *was* to have indeed gotten to a six figure business from home. It's also true that there aren't an extraordinary amount of recipes in the book and that they are simple, I have to assert here that there *are* more than just two, but either way, the author herself says she adds them as a starting point and that the “fun” of soaps is to experiment and find what is the best combination for yourself. I agree, it sounds much more beneficial to create my own recipes and find what works best for my needs than instead of following what everyone else makes. That's what the internet is for. That said, the author herself says she thinks that soap making is easy and that all it takes is the basic knowledge and then practice. I personally suspect the recipes are there only for that very practice she wants to encourage. I respect that this author sticks her theory that you gotta know the basics and that's it. If you wanted an exhaustive guide with thousands of complex recipes then this paradigm would indeed be in direct opposition.
Overall, I think the author took an honest approach to teaching two things in the book and she succeeded in doing what she set out to do. This book didn't promise to be a recipe book or a master guide to creating business conglomerates. It's about making and selling soaps from home. She did it and she's sharing her experience, that's all. It's to help start your own journey, not copy hers.
She takes us through the basics, and explains the components, which *is* boring if you're not into details, I'll grant you that, but I found it very interesting as I was completely in the dark about almost all of it. Also, if the business part of the book is perceived as short (I will agree that the soap making part is larger) I still think the business part of the book covered what I needed to know to start a home-based business, it not only told me about some common sense basics like needing accounting, but also things I hadn't ever contemplated like FDA guidelines for soap labels.
I'd recommend this book to people like me who are curious about making soap. Sorry, but I really believe this is a great beginner book. I'm a beginner myself and it sounded just right to me. I haven't tried making any yet, but at least on an information level it left me quite satisfied. I definitely recommend this book if you want to learn about making soap, its components, processes and ingredients, and I'd also recommend it if you already know something about making soap and you think you might want to turn it into a home business. This can help steer you the right way. If you are a professional at making soaps, or you are looking for a book to make your business plan down to the minutest of details, then you should probably look elsewhere.

Soap Making Business Startup How to Start Run Grow a Million Dollar Success from Home! (Audible Audio Edition) Suzanne Carpenter Dylan Jones Valencia Publishing House Books Reviews
From someone who has a business degree and is very creative (me), this is an excellent book for a beginner soap maker. Regardless how far you go with your passion for soap making, this book makes sense. It's easy-to-read, concise, It gives the ' how to' from buying supplies to managing the financial aspect of having a business rather than a hobby. An intuitive and creative entrepreneur sometimes has that "automatic" marketing ability to grow the business - Suzanne has some great suggestions that make perfect, and, common sense to do just that, if you aren't afraid to put in a little time and footwork to get growing! Making the soap is fun and easy! Suzanne did a great job expressing that concept in her book. She was obviously a great success with her very own business - can't wait to see what she tackles next!
First of all, let me say the the author seems like a very nice lady, who meant well. She is probably a lovely person.
That said, I regret this purchase and wish that I had purchased a different book. At least 90% of it is dedicated to the basics of making soap, what materials are used, etc. What's worse, even this information is well, mediocre. It's not terrible, you probably won't get injured, but it's just very basic, bare bones soapmaking. There is nothing in this portion of the book that will make your soap stand out from the rapidly increasing crowd of soapers who are producing and selling great products. There is not even any good info on who to buy fragrance oils etc from! Some of the info on essential oils is erroneous- sweet orange is NOT lasting in cold process soap. There's nothing about where to find information on safe amounts of essential oils, instead, a standard amount is suggested, in mls....not ounces or grams.... For some essential oils, this is dangerous advice. The entire soapmaking portion of the book, which goes until page 139, is peppered with problems here and there. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a beginning soapmaking book.
The business portion of the book, from page 140-184, is OK, but honestly it isn't much better than if I had read it on Wiki-How. I'm certain that the author is, in fact highly successful in her soap business, and makes good soap. It's just that somehow, the most vital and engaging portion of her knowledge didn't make it into this book.
I found this book on the soap making business start- up, to be quite detailed and informative.
It covered a lot of information on soap making from the different methods of soap making, to the ingredients & benefits of using specific elements, to making different soaps smells and colors.
She gives great ideas on improvising the soap molds with everyday things in your home to save money.
In addition, Carpenter gives great ideas and background on making your homemade soap into a lucrative business venture. She goes over packaging & labeling requirements, branding, pricing, marketing and sales.
This book is a wonderful tool for advancing the beginning home soap maker, or advanced, into the world of selling their soaps for profit.
So many great ideas and insights from Carpenter in general for starting a home business in soap making or really any home business idea.
