A Vietnam memoir with a different twist. Jennifer Branch was just two years old when her father Army Captain Branch was killed in combat in Vietnam. When she grew up, she discovered letters he had written home, and she wanted to know what her father was like from the men in his command. Through reunion groups, she found Charles Gorman, a guidance counselor in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, who had been Branch's radioman. It was Jennifer's request and Gorman's own sense of urgency to write about his combat tour in Vietnam in 1969 that sparked the writing of this memoir. Gorman dredges up the nightmares of the daytime patrols away from the relatively safe Fire Support Bases and forays into the deadly dangerous booby traps and punji pits in Hobo Woods. He documents the terrifying nighttime ambushes, calling in "dustoffs" to medevac out the dead and wounded to Cu Chi, and the daily indignities of living in monsoons or heat and humidity with mosquitoes, mines, and mortars. No need to see the movies about Vietnam, this is the real deal about riding the chopper's skids and dropping into LZ's, stepping carefully into the footsteps of the point man to avoid trip wires that could send you home in a body bag, zipping your buddies into those body bags, and diving into water-filled rice paddies while under attack, and praying the mortars would fall short and allow you to go home alive or at least in one piece.

I am a third generation combat vet having served five tours between Iraq and Afghanistan. My grandfather served during World War II and my father during Vietnam. My father never opened up to me about his war time experiences until I returned from my first tour in Iraq. A lot of Vietnam vets feel put down or pushed aside because of the political atmosphere of the times. I am glad honorable men like Mr. Gorman have come forward and shared their experiences. As the wars in the Middle East wind down the number of combat vets within our ranks will begin to dwindle. I am amazed at how fast the right shoulder patches (combat patch) begin to disappear from our ranks. Two years ago while standing behind a formation I saw perhaps 80% with combat patches. Two years later that number is has dropped to about 50% or less.
Soldiers fight wars. That is the bottom line. The best way for a Soldier to experience the hardships of war - and learn to survive - is to actually fight in one, lacking an available war; a close second is for a Soldier to read about it. I believe, as combat vets, it is our obligation – our duty – to write about our experiences for the next generation of Soldiers to learn and help them understand what to expect.
Some, like Mr. Gordon, take a more serious approach. Others, like Si Robertson (Duck Dynasty) and me, have taken a more comical approach. Either way my idea is to prepare our future Soldiers for the next war as it is one day closer.

It was good reading about a war most civilians found offensive and never thanked the GIs who served and gave the ultimate gift so that we may have freedom .. Their young lives .. I welcome them home and thank them for serving
Good read. Another Vietnam experience that should be shared. I show these to my son who fought in Iraq, hopefully to get him to release the demons that have followed him home. It appears to be a therapeutic endeavor, which he sorely needs. Books like this one may just be the push he needs.
I have kept Chuck Gorman's book by my bedside the past couple weeks and, after reading through fully, go back and re-read sections every night. In a sense, i feel as though i am there with him -- in the 3-tiered jungle, sweltering in the hot sun in a foxhole, or simply trying to stay alive. He is so right about so many things...he was one of the lucky ones. Being smart, intuitive and resourceful, certainly a description of the Charlie Gorman I knew back in South Dakota, were absolutely necessary, but lady luck and the little rosary he had wrapped around his wrist must have played an important role in bringing him back to be the role model he became for his kids, his students, and all of those who he has known in his life. I am embarrassed to think about how casually we now think of the Viet Nam era, and how much we now take for granted in this great country...our growth, like Chuck's, has come at a huge cost. My thanks to Chuck all those guys who gave us so much of their lives, and especially thanks to Chuck for sharing these intimacies with us.
Of course I love it. As a 2/14th daughter, I have read and re-read it several times and appreciate the depth and time it took to research and recollect. Monumental for a Vietnam combat veteran. So many of these experiences I know you wanted to forget, Mr. Gorman, but this is real history. Lived. Survived. And now taught...thanks to you. I love that readers can hear your quiet mid-western matter-of-fact manner in this story. Thank you for valuing this time in your life enough to do the work it took to preserve it. I will cherish this book, and pass it down to my kids.
As a Vietnam Vet, I am always looking for a good book that truly describes what it is like to be in combat. I was in the same areas as Charles, also in 69/70. He took me back to places I had been, with a totally accurate description of what we went through. The daily grind of the elements, plus trying to stay alive are vividly described by Charles. In a time when so many people have forgotten the struggles of the Vietnam Veteran, or really don't have a clue what this war was about, this is the book for you. Should be required reading in High School. I have read over a dozen books written by former soldiers about Vietnam. I put this one at the top of the list.
At lot of years, a lot of thought went into this well written book. Do yourself a favor, learn from Charles what being an infantryman in Vietnam was like.

Bought this because the writer is one of our old substitute teachers. Everyone loved when Mr Gorman walked in to class instead of the regular teachers. Mr Gorman is one awesome dude!
Real life experience. Good read.
